Does the color of e-liquid matter?
E-liquids come in a variety of flavors, PG/VG ratios and nicotine concentrations. But can the color of the e-liquid tell you anything about the quality of your upcoming vaping session?
What color are most
e-liquids?
Most vape juices on the
market comes in the same palette of colors ranging from clear to yellowish to
light brown or light orange. This typically means that your e-liquid has a
“standard” set of components like propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin,
flavoring and nicotine (or lack thereof).
You may also find e-liquid
that comes in bright or even fluorescent colors like blue, green, pink, etc.
This typically means that some coloring has been added to the vape juice. If
you are not a fan of extra additives, you should avoid juices of “unnaturally”
bright colors.
What if my e-liquid changes
color?
It is normal for e-liquid to
change color over time. Especially, if it has been left open and under direct
sunlight.
For nicotine, light and
oxygen are catalysts — they are responsible for your e-liquid changing color.
Light and oxygen affect certain flavors more than others and seem to have the
strongest effect on darker and sweeter e-liquids.
Thus, if you want your vape
juices to keep their original colors, it is best to store them in dark, cool
places, away from the heat and direct sunlight. In most countries, vape juice
manufacturers are required to sell them in clear plastic bottles. If you want
to ensure an extra level of protection for your e-liquids, it’s best to keep
them in tightly sealed darkened glass bottles.
Another reason your e-liquid
could be changing color is because it contains a sweetener. Plus, high VG
content may also be to blame — e-liquids with a lot of vegetable glycerin tend
to darken faster than those with a high PG content.
Can darkening e-liquid be a
sign of low quality?
If your e-liquid starts
darkening after purchase and does not stop, it could be an indication that it
hadn’t need properly steeped. Steeping is the process of letting the e-liquid
“sit” after production and letting it settle for the colors to properly show.
This stage in e-liquid production is a must for most higher-end vendors and
usually takes place prior to shipping. However, some lower-end brands that are
in a hurry to ship out their products may not give the process enough time,
which will result in your e-liquid getting darker over time. Thus, it's always a
good idea to exercise due diligence and purchase your e-liquid supplies from
reliable sources.
