How to tell quality vape juice from bad quality vape juice?

These days, you are definitely not strapped for choice when it comes to e-liquids. We have all sorts of flavors and nicotine strengths to choose from — plus, you can also vape zero Nic salts.

And, just like any other products available in abundance, e-liquids have many different tiers of quality.

So do you tell quality vape juice from inferior products? While prices are definitely an indicator, there are other telltale signs as well.

First signs: strange smell, weird look and damage to your vape kit

Low-quality e-liquid tends to not smell so good. If you are used to premium vape juices, you will immediately smell the difference once you’ve loaded the e-juice into your vape kit. Thus, the first sign that your e-liquid may be of low quality is a strange smell — and if you feel like your menthol vape juice does not smell quite right, chances are it may be of questionable quality.

This may be a no-brainer but it’s worth mentioning. Quality e-juice should look good: it should not be cloudy or have anything floating in it. It should also age well and you should not notice any major changes in color and taste even after a period of time (provided, of course) that you keep it in proper conditions.

Low-quality e-juice will eventually damage your vape gear by gunking up the coils or cracking the tank. Over time, this can also lead to corrosion and completely destroyed coils. While vape kits can be quite inexpensive themselves, they are definitely pricier than a bottle of e-juice. So, investing in quality e-liquid does not only make for a more satisfying vaping experience but will also help you keep your gear in shape.

Hazardous ingredients

Apart from not looking at its best and causing problems with your vape kit, purchasing low-quality e-liquid may have more serious consequences. Some e-liquids may contain potentially dangerous ingredients putting your health at unnecessary risks. One of the ingredients that are generally advised to be avoided is diacetyl, which is a natural chemical found in a very low concentration in apples, coffee, tobacco, vinegar, and other items. It is also used in the production of butter, margarine, flavorings and so on. Some studies have found diacetyl to be hazardous for workers in manufacturing facilities where it is used and it is believed to be harmful when heated or boiled. High exposure to diacetyl in a manufacturing setting has also been linked to respiratory problems.

E-liquids makers often use food flavorings to give taste to e-liquids and this means that some vape juices may contain diacetyl. Long term exposure to diacetyl can lead to respiratory problems and some would advise avoiding vape juices that contain this chemical. It is important to note, though, that the average diacetyl-containing e-liquid still carries around 100 times less diacetyl than a traditional tobacco cigarette.

Poor quality nicotine

High-quality vape juices typically use pure nicotine and most manufacturers would run Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) or High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to ensure its quality. Cheap quality e-liquids may use low quality nicotine resulting in a harsh aftertaste that is similar to burnt pepper.

Not steeped before shipping

Premium e-liquid brands typically steep their juices before they are shipped out. Steeping is a process that allows vape juice flavors to blend together and it can significantly improve your overall vaping experience as the e-liquid’s main ingredients (vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, flavorings, and nicotine) have more time to oxidize. Low-quality e-liquids manufacturers, o the other hand, in order to save time, may not steep their products for as long as needed (or not at all). As a result, the e-liquid has a harsher taste.

So, how to avoid purchasing low-quality e-liquid?

Your first indicator will probably be the price: if the e-juice you are considering costs significantly lower than other juices on the market, this may be cause for suspicion.

It’s very important to buy your e-liquids from reputable suppliers and make sure they have been approved for sale in your country. As we now know, for instance, most of the cases of the current lung disease outbreak have been linked to black market THC containing e-liquids.

Finally, do some research prior to purchasing a bottle of e-juice: read about its ingredients, check other vapers’ reviews and consult your local vape shop. Quality juice is absolutely essential for a safe and satisfying vaping experience.
