What’s the difference between CBD vape oils and CBD tinctures?

CBD has become very popular. In fact, CBD consumption seems to be a fast-growing health and wellness trend with lots of research supporting the numerous health benefits of CBD oils.
Until CBD vaping hit the scene, the most popular way of consuming CBD was CBD tinctures, which are taken orally. Today, we have CBD e-liquids, which can be vaped. And there seems to be some confusion between the two with a lot of people wanting to know whether CBD tinctures can also be used for vaping. The answer to that is both yes and no.

The main difference between CBD e-liquids and CBD tinctures are that they are intended for different methods of consumption.

CBD tinctures are created by steeping hemp flowers and leaves in a high-proof grain alcohol solution and applying low heat to the solution over a substantial period of time. As a result of the process, the active compounds found in hemp plants to permeate into the alcohol and the excess alcohol is boiled off. Another way of extracting CBD from hemp plants is CO2 extraction, which results in a concentrated CBD extract, which is later diluted with oils (olive, coconut, hempseed, etc.) that make the extract easier to absorb.

CBD vape oils are made in much the same way. However, as CBD oils are typically too thick to pass through vape pens, a thinning agent is added to the solution to make it vapeable. The thinning agents typically added to CBD e-liquids are the familiar Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) — but there are other options as well.

CBD tinctures are meant to be taken orally while CBD vapes are designed for use in e-cigarettes. With that, CBD oils that are made with non-toxic carrier oils (like PG or VG) could, theoretically, also be ingested. And CBD tinctures made with VG or PG carrier oils could technically be vaped as well. However, as these products are specifically optimized for their respective delivery methods and may contain other ingredients, it is not recommended to use them otherwise than specified on the label. CBD tinctures, for instance, do not usually taste good when heated up. Plus, vaping a CBD tincture that doesn’t contain a thinning agent can clog your vape pen. When a pure CBD oil (with no thinners added) is vaped, it can also produce a thick smoke that can be really harsh on the lungs.

What has been your experience with vaping CBD? Have you ever tried vaping CBD tinctures?
