Five side-effects of vaping and how to avoid them

Vaping is less risky for your health than smoking — and it comes with substantially fewer side-effects. However, when switching to the new habit, you may experience certain unpleasant symptoms that may have to do with the way you vape, what you vape or how much you vape. Here are the five most frequent complaints new vapors have — and the suggestions on how to remedy them.

Dry mouth

Dry mouth is one of the most often cited side-effects of vaping. It is associated with the base components of e-liquid: PG and VG (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin). High PG concentrations are frequently reported to have a drying effect on the mouth, but those who prefer VG based e-liquids also experience it. Why does this happen? BothPG and VG are humectants —and this means they are actually used to keep things moist. But both of these substances are actually hygroscopic and they absorb water as well.

If you’re experiencing a dry mouth sensation when vaping, try using an oral rinse that's meant for hydration. This would be the easiest way to remedy the dry mouth feeling. However, if this does not help and you continue experiencing dry mouth persistently, this may be the symptom of the chronic dry mouth condition and it's best and strongly advised to consult a dental professional for help.

Sore throat

Another common side-effect of vaping is a sore or irritated throat. This may be caused by a number of ingredients in your e-liquid: nicotine, propylene glycol or even flavorings. There have been reports that connected a sore throat with high vaping e-liquids high in nicotine content (like mic salt pods, for instance). If you suspect that your sore throat may be resulting from the e-liquid you are using, try making a few modifications. Try a vape juice with a lower level of VG or go down in nicotine level. You may also want to consider switching to a different e-liquid brand or experimenting with flavorings.

If the e-liquid is not the problem, then it may be the type of wire used in your vape coil. Check the specifications on your vaping gadget for a nickel. If your vape wire contains nickel or nichrome, consider replacing your device or asking the manufacturer for a different coil option like stainless steel.

Coughing

New vapers are typically the ones experiencing coughing fits. In most cases, coughing is a result of the wrong inhaler technique or using the wrong vape juice for the type of your vaping gear or inhale mode. Examples of these would be using e-liquid with high nicotine content and trying the direct lung inhale or trying to take a cigarette-like draw on a vaping gadget with large airflow.

If you start coughing when taking a draw, check the airflow on your device. If it is tight, then it is meant for a mouth-to-lung to inhale. If it's large, then the device is meant for direct lung vaping. If you are vaping using the direct lung inhale, it is best to keep your nicotine level under 6mg/ml.

Feeling dizzy

New vapers may also experience dizziness when starting to vape. Typically, this feeling should go away as you vape more. The lightheadedness you feel comes not from the vaping itself but rather from the nicotine in your e-liquid. Thus if the feeling does not subside with time, it is recommended that you switch to a vape juice with lower nicotine concentration.

Fatigue

This is the one more side-effect that has more to do with nicotine than with the process of vaping. Though nicotine is a stimulant, which is often used to increase mental alertness, it can also have sedative effects. Depending on the specifics of how your body processes nicotine, you may feel more tired than alert after vaping nicotine. If you feel sleepy after a vaping session, try either lowering or increasing the nic level of your e-liquid and see which option works best for you.
