What made you quit smoking?

There are plenty of reasons why you might want to quit smoking. Here are some of the most frequently cited ones:

“I quit because I was scared of the consequences”.

The adverse health effects of smoking haven’t been a debate for a long time. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and one of five heart disease deaths are linked to smoking directly. This is more than enough to scare most smokers into ex-smokers. Statistically, even more people consider quitting smoking if someone in their family has suffered health consequences from the habit.

“I quit because smoking was interfering with my lifestyle”.

In addition to long-term health consequences, smoking has a significant impact on the day-to-day as well. If you enjoy an active lifestyle, play sports, go hiking, etc. — pairing these activities with smoking may prove complicated. Smoking can affect physical endurance, lead to an increased risk of injury and complications and poorer physical performance in general.

“I quit for my family”.

The adverse effects of second-hand smoking have also been proven. While avoiding bothering others with smoke is pretty easy when you live alone, things change when you have a family. The pressure to quit will be even stronger if your partner does not like you smoking or if there are children in the house.

“I quit to save money”.

Smoking is not a cheap pastime. A pack of cigarettes in Europe would cost you around 10 euros on average while the prices in individual countries can go even higher. For a heavy smoker, this translates into quite a heavy chunk of change at the end of the month. As more and more countries impose taxes on smoking, the prices are expected to rise and access to cigarettes is likely to become more and more restricted in the future.

“I quit to look better.”

Some might consider this superficial — but for many ex-smokers looks were an important factor that tipped the scales in favor of quitting the habit. Smoking is known to negatively affect one’s skin, teeth and hair and, in general, provoke faster aging.
