How to choose your first e-liquid?

If you are new to vaping, even something as basic as choosing your e-liquid can seem overwhelming. And we don’t blame you: there are so many vape juices on the market these days that choosing one to start with can prove to be a formidable undertaking.

In this quick post, we will tell you about the key things to take into account when your first e-liquid.

Flavor

The flavor is probably the most exciting part of this selection process — but also a very important one.

If you don’t like the flavor of your e-liquid, the rest doesn’t really matter — you simply won’t be vaping it. So, how do you know which flavor you might like if you’ve never vaped before?

If you used to smoke, you might want to start with something familiar like a tobacco blend that — will help mimic that sensation you used to get from smoking and feel familiar.

If you are not keen on tobacco, the next popular classics would be menthol or mint. These flavors are cool and refreshing and are generally liked by most vapers.

If you have a sweet tooth or simply want to one trying out something more fun consider trying a fruity flavor like apple, orange or even grape.

Eventually, as you get more adventurous with your fave juices you might want to try more exotic flamers lie come watermelon mango or even Bacon for pizza.

PG or VG? Or Both

There are four key components that make up most e-liquids: PG (propylene glycol) or VG (vegetable glycerin), food-grade flavoring, water and nicotine (which is optional)

Propylene glycol, PG, is an agent typically used in flavorings to distribute the taste evenly. You will often find it in the list of ingredients for vanilla extracts, food colorings, and even pharmaceuticals.

Vegetable oil, VG, is basically what the name says: a thick vegetable oil-based liquid that is often used as a sweetener or as a sugar alternative.

Both PG and VG are certified by the FDA as “safe for consumption”.

PG or VG are the main components of most e-juices, while the other ingredients account for about 10%.

On the market of vape juices, you will find both PG liquids and VG liquids — as well as mixtures of the two. So what is the difference and which e-liquid would work best for you?

Propylene glycol e-juices are thinner than vegetable oil-based liquids. Because of that, they leave less residue in the tank. PG vape juices are flavorless and do not affect the original taste of e-liquids. They are also known for a stronger throat hit — the more nicotine is in your e-liquid, the harsher the said throat hit will be.

Vegetable e-juices tend to be thicker and more viscous. Thus, they leave more residue in the tank and can affect the lifespan of your vaping device. VG liquids also have a light flavor of their own, which is a little bit sweet, and it may slightly change the taste of your e-liquid. One of the main advantages of e-liquids that are high in VG is their ability to produce large clouds — and this is something many vapers enjoy. If you want to blow rings of vapor or try out any other vape cloud tricks, you may want to try out some VG vape juices.

While both VG and PG juices are generally safe, some people (about 4% of the population) may develop a PG allergy that will typically manifest through the following symptoms: sinus problems, dry mouth, sore throat, headaches and nausea, and, occasionally, hives. Note that the same symptoms may also be the side-effects of nicotine withdrawal — especially if you used to be a heavy smoker.

If you experience the above symptoms over a prolonged period of time, consider trying a liquid that is 100% VG.

Choosing among PG, VG or mixed liquids mostly comes down to what you want to get out of the experience. For a tougher throat hit and if you used to smoke,  go with a PG-based liquid. Want to blow huge clouds? Try vaping VG. You should also check with your vaping device maker as to what liquids would go best with the gadget.

Nic Salt E-liquids

Whether you are a vaper or not yet, you have probably heard of JUUL and nic salts. And as you experiment with e-liquids you are sure to come across plenty of tempting nic salt juices. So, how are they different from other e-liquids?

Nic salts are made using a different method of tobacco extraction and benzoic acid. This results in their ability to deliver a high concentration of nicotine — up to 50mg. Thus, they can give vapers the sensation that is as close to smoking as currently possible but without the harsh throat hit that usually comes when vaping freebase e-juices that are high in nicotine.

If you used to be a heavy smoker, nic salt e-liquids may be the best option to mimic that experience and deliver more nicotine into your system.

Nicotine level

Choosing your e-liquid’s nicotine level is also an important consideration. You will find a variety of nicotine strengths available on the market. Generally, if you used to be a light smoker, 6mg/ml or lower should be enough; if you used to smoke up to one pack a day, you would probably feel more comfortable with higher dosages from 9mg/ml to 16mg/ml. Ex heavy smokers, on the other hand, tend to go above 18mg/ml.

While getting the right nicotine strength is definitely important, you also shouldn’t overdo it. If you feel that your e-liquid is giving your headaches, stop musing it and try a vape juice with less nicotine.
Finally, zero nic e-liquids are also an option. Nicotine is not an essential component of e-liquids and, if you are ready to stop using it altogether, you can do perfectly well without it.
